Scarlet Sadness and Structure
This book is shaped by symbolic events and set up by dates. Sentences like "When he was born" and "Doodles 6th birthday" or "Summer of 1918". The events in this book are almost cinematic or soap opera like. There's a sense of tradedgy at the beginning, then triumph as he walks, and then the sad ending made the story come full circle. The entire story sets itself up for a very symbolic ending, with the bird then doodle dying. The story really makes you feel this sense of morality, almost like making you feel like you should have done something.

Yeah like when I was reading the story I was sad for him when he was dying. Then I was happy when he was triumphant. Then I was sad again at the end. Full Circle :D
ReplyDeleteI think the whole story was sad. In the beginning he kind of makes it obvious Doodle will die.. And even when he walks it is kind of bitter-sweet. I mean its not normal to learn to walk when your 6... and he was still stumbling.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Paul I was happy when he could walk but sad when he died.
